Christmas Lights Around Town!
Christmas lights around town everywhere you look. They glowing in the night as they reflect off of houses and trees and anything else the lights attract. Walking through the neighborhood, you can pick out the decorations you like and get inspired to decorate your own house.
Snowy peak on a very cold day on top of a mountain overlooks a valley below. Grass pokes its way through the snowy layer that has started to accumulate. The mix of thick and thin snow flies through the air and makes it very hard to see. The mountains in the distance sit back humbly shaping the countryside with a rigid form. What is missing here? A snow man of course.
This piece is the conceptual background for a story that I am going to do about a snowman. I am still working on the story but conceptually, this is part of the journey my snowman character will make. Winter is on its way as the last leaves fall from the trees. Soon the snow will fall and fill up our sidewalks and driveways. Those who live in the forest regions will have their own challenges as well. It is very easy for the snow to cut one off from the rest of the world.
This design was created in Clip Studio Paint and consists of two layers. I used a heavy inking tool to layout the shape of the trees and then used a painterly texture brush to fill in the detail of the branches. I used the airbrush tool for highlights and shadows. This is the fastest way to do this although there are other ways of accomplishing the same thing.
The second layer is of the mountains. I used the painterly brush again and painted in the mountain shapes. I used triangular forms and let them fade off into the distance. The painterly brush can be used to create light and shadow just by changing the direction of your stroke. The last step of this piece was the snow and rain. I used a spatter brush to do the large snow and a rain tool to scrape in the fine windy snow flakes.
If you enjoyed this tutorial, maybe you’ll like the one I did during the fall. I also did an interest autumn piece earlier this year as well. If you liked this, my latest book discusses all of the pieces from 2017 and how I designed them.
I hope you enjoyed this piece. Please let me know what you think! Your comments are important to me.
About Me – My Digital Work
About Me Digital work. Good day everyone! My name is Jeffrey Hunt and I love to create digital paintings and comics. I have just started writing and publishing more digital work and books to complement my art. Most of all, I enjoy sharing how I create my digital designs to help inspire artists everywhere to keep on drawing and perfecting their style.
While serving in the Armed Forces for the last 19 years, I have been to 15 different countries and almost all 50 states. I enjoy talking with folks, sharing ideas, and creating new art. I bring my sketchpad with me everywhere I go. Inspiration can hit at any time or place.
Understanding the Struggle
Artists everywhere struggle at times to put their ideas, thoughts, and concepts onto paper. As a result, many artists give up too quickly.
The dreaded blank sheet of paper can be a little scary at times or intimidating at the very least. Because of an understanding I have with my own struggle, I want to share all my ideas and projects here and share with you my processes for creating my stories and designs. Furthermore, on a regular basis I will be posting my work and providing tutorials for how I created the finished designs. In addition, here are a couple of my most recent posts both here and here.
My blog is my primary means of communicating my style and any new breakthroughs I have using Clip Studio Paint. I also want to hear from my fans everywhere. So, wherever you see a comment box, please let me know what you think and what you want to see more of.
Last month I published my first book, The Concept Art idea Book. It is free if you are an Amazon Prime member or you can get it through the Kindle Lending Library. Especially relevant, the book details my work over the past year and is packed with my processes for each design. Get your copy today. It is available in E-book and hard copy.

Happy Halloween from J HUNT GRAPHIX. The air is cold and the sky is dimly lit. The colors of orange and yellow dominate the night as they permeate from lit pumpkins and harvest lights. There is a minor wind blowing across your shoulder. It is just enough to make you think a ghost is notifying you of its presence. There are just enough clues to let you know that Summer is gone and won’t be returning anytime soon.
Enjoy the Night
As you walk from house to house this Halloween take in all of the holiday aura. As you see the day wane into dark blues and blacks and the horizon fade into a blur of trees, bask in the revelation that Halloween brings forth all of the scary things at once. Little specs of white or yellow eyes peek at you from hidden bushes and the sounds of skittering bugs hiding from the colder air echo from the grass. Was something trying to grab at you or was there something on the sidewalk causing you to trip?
About the Picture
The scene above was created using Clip Studio Paint. The objective of the scene was to capture all of the cool colors of Halloween and accentuate the look of a brightly lit pumpkin by having it reflect off the tree. What do you see?
Five layers were used to create this piece. I used two flat color layers to help pull the tree away from the background of the scene. The tree, inks and colors, is on one layer and the background is on a separate layer. By doing this, I was able to use a blur filter on the background to make it more misty and mysterious without disturbing the look of the tree. I really wanted the tree to be the most distinct object in the scene other than the pumpkin of course.
The glow layer amplified the light from the pumpkin and made it look brighter against the darker background. I didn’t put a lot of detail into pumpkin other than the face as a composition strategy to keep the primary focus on the tree.
Instead of using basic flat colors, I used many colored pencils and colored inks to create the color effects that I was seeking. I wanted the scene to look more of a painting than a regular digital image.
I hope you enjoy this scene as well as other scenes that I have at Jhuntgraphix.com.
In the months to follow, I want to focus on the “How” of my designs and not so much the “What”. This means more instructional posts and not just images themselves. I have a video on YouTube that you can watch here.
As always, I want to know what YOU want to see more of. What kind of content can I produce that is more useful to you? Does anyone like comics? I can do those too. Let me know.
I wish youHappy blogging!
